Cartoon of the Week: Winamp is making a comeback in 2019
One of the apps that helped define the ’90s is making a comeback next year. Winamp, the 21-year-old media player, was one of the most popular ways to listen to music on the computer before iTunes and is now getting a reboot, intending to put all your music, podcasts and streaming services in one place.
Alexandre Saboundjian, CEO of Radionomy, which bought Winamp in 2014, says: “There will be a completely new version next year, with the legacy of Winamp but a more complete listening experience. You can listen to the MP3s you may have at home, but also to the cloud, to podcasts, to streaming radio stations, to a playlist you have perhaps built.”
The media player may have lost the popularity it once had but, as old habits die hard, the software still has a passionate base of 100 million monthly users.
“Winamp users really are everywhere. It’s a huge number,” says Saboundjian. “We have a really strong and important community. But everybody ‘knows’ that Winamp is dead, that we don’t work on it any more. This is not the case.”
The new version of Winamp is coming to both iOS and Android and promises to be a different experience.
