Cartoon of the week: Sundar Pichai to lead Alphabet
It’s officially the end of an era at Google. As the company faces some headwinds, cofounders Larry Page and Sergey Brin decided it was time to hand over Alphabet’s reins to Sundar Pichai, current CEO of Google.
Page had been CEO of Google parent organization Alphabet and Brin served as president. Pichai will keep his current position at Google and take over as the CEO of Alphabet.

To announce the news, Page and Brin wrote a blog post stating, “With Alphabet now well-established, and Google and the Other Bets operating effectively as independent companies, it’s the natural time to simplify our management structure. We’ve never been ones to hold on to management roles when we think there’s a better way to run the company. And Alphabet and Google no longer need two CEOs and a President.”
Is the company turning the page on Page?
Not really, as neither Brin nor Page will be entirely out of the picture. They will both retain their seats on the board as they control a combined 51.3 percent of the voting power.
“Today, in 2019, if the company was a person, it would be a young adult of 21 and it would be time to leave the roost,” Brin and Page wrote in a joint press release. “While it has been a tremendous privilege to be deeply involved in the day-to-day management of the company for so long, we believe it’s time to assume the role of proud parents—offering advice and love, but not daily nagging!”
The company has dealt with a lot of tensions that continue to escalate between Google management and rank-and-file employees. Brin and Page stepping down and putting Pichai in the driver’s seat comes at a time when Google is facing some of its most difficult challenges.
Will Pichai succeed where Brin and Page have failed?
