Cartoon of the week: Now we can work remotely even in rural zones
US senator Elizabeth Warren has announced a plan to expand internet access in rural communities to give ‘every home in America’ fibre broadband at an affordable price.
‘I will make sure every home in America has a fibre broadband connection at a price families can afford,’ the senator from Massachusetts wrote. ‘That means publicly owned and operated networks – and no giant [internet service provider] running away with taxpayer dollars.’
As a lot of Americans living in rural areas and tribal lands don’t have access to minimum-speed broadband, Elizabeth’s proposal includes $85 billion for non-profits and local governments to build fibre networks to cover all these areas.
Having access to reliable, high-speed internet will help unlock economic opportunities and advances in many industries, such as telemedicine and healthcare. This will make remote work possible even in rural zones. And who wouldn’t want to work in a quiet environment while admiring a magnificent landscape?
