Cartoon of the Week: Russia Teaming Up with NASA to Build a Lunar Space Station
NASA announced this week that it will collaborate with Russia’s space agency, Roscosmos, to explore space. They two organisations have agreed to build a groundbreaking new space station, to be called Deep Space Gateway.
The space station will bring a longstanding concept into reality, as it’s a common vision for human exploration.
“While the Deep Space Gateway is still in concept formulation, NASA is pleased to see growing international interest in moving into cislunar space as the next step for advancing human space exploration,” NASA’s acting Administrator Robert Lightfoot said in a statement. “Statements such as this one signed with Roscosmos show the gateway concept as an enabler to the kind of exploration architecture that is affordable and sustainable.”
The Deep Space Gateway will become the main destination for astronauts, and aims at extending human presence beyond the Earth’s orbit. Travelling there will help both parties to gain knowledge and experience so they can venture beyond the moon.
“The international partners will work together to build a miniature space station in lunar orbit – a type of infrastructure that could serve as a stepping-stone for future crewed missions to Mars,” NASA said.
As challenging as this venture might seem, the collaboration between these two will certainly give birth to the best way to travel to and from cislunar space.
Let’s wait and see what the bright future holds!
