Cartoon of the Week: Netflix is keeping “Friends” for one more year
This week, fans of the popular sitcom “Friends” freaked out when they noticed the series would finish showing on Netflix on Jan.1, 2019.
No more of Joey’s common (but not that common!) sense, Chandler’s sarcasm or Monica’s compulsive cleanliness – that seemed a tragedy to fans of the series.
I can’t blame them – and neither did Netflix. After this outpouring of grief, the streaming service announced that the show will remain on Netflix throughout 2019. To please the fans, Netflix will pay around $100 million for the rights to continue streaming the show.
That’s a significant jump from the $30 million that Netflix paid previously. But considering that the future of entertainment turns around online viewing, Netflix is doing what it takes to expand its customer base, which now stands at 130 million worldwide.
