Happening in San Francisco: Cafe X unveils robotic cafe
A startup called Cafe X Technologies has introduced a robotic cafe that serves coffee in about 20 seconds.
Your days of waiting at least 15 minutes in line for your morning coffee are gone because an ingenious 23-year-old college dropout has decided to kick you up and out of your sleepy doldrums by unveiling Cafe X in San Francisco: a coffee shop with robots that will serve you delicious cups of coffee consistently and conveniently.
With a fully mechanized coffee shop, you can now order coffee and get it within seconds (so you can do more useful things with your time). To order one, all you need to do is to use the touchscreen at the kiosk or use the cafe X app.
The end result? A delicious espresso drink 😀
Cafe X sets itself apart as it’s capable of preparing between 100 and 120 drinks per hour. It’s setting a new standard for automation technology by removing the risk of preparation error or unexpected variability. Customers can choose the brand of beans and the amount of milk and flavors used.
Moreover, Cafe X comes with cheaper prices: just $2.25 for an 8 oz drink that regularly sells for $4 to $5 in San Francisco.
Let’s admit it, it’s not every day that a business innovation cuts costs!
Cafe X is another tech startup in San Francisco where automation is going up a notch. San Francisco quinoa restaurant Eatsa lets people place orders without ever having to interact with a person. The secretive Momentum Machines, also based in San Francisco, is building a machine that assembles gourmet hamburgers automatically.
San Francisco is, apparently, the place where robots and innovation are taking hold of our lives.
But now with robots taking up human jobs, will a more automated economy lead to an overanxious population?
We still don’t know, but let’s look on the bright side: on top of having a robot that does everything you want efficiently, you now no longer have to give tips 😀
Cafe X founder Henry Hu is reassuring us on that though: “This won’t replace baristas or the coffee shop experience that so many people have come to love—we don’t aim to do that. What we’re offering is the best possible experience for people who are looking for consistent specialty coffee to-go.”
He added that: “The reason for using a robot is that it allows people on-site to be more productive, because moving cups around a thousand times a day is not a very productive thing. It’s a very repetitive, boring thing, which is why we have a robot doing that.”
We’ll wait to see if coffee experts will actually use their skills to prepare recipes instead of doing a “repetitive boring thing.”
We can expect Cafe X kiosks to be installed in many tech company offices, as that is what Hu is currently working on.
