Cartoon of the Week: A mother bringing her baby assistant to the workplace
Susie Martin, director of operations and certified meteorologist for weather company Praedictix, wore her one-year-old baby to work this week to promote babywearing to other parents during International Babywearing Week. She wanted to raise awareness of the practice.
According to the event’s website, babywearing reduces crying, builds confidence in parents and reduces anxiety from separation.
‘I wanted to promote this wonderful tool that’s helped me as a mom and the bonding experience between mother and son,’ Martin of Minnesota, told Good Morning America. ‘I suppose it’s a way for the baby to be comforted. It was nice for me personally because I could multitask while comforting my child.’
The video featuring Martin and her child presenting the weather forecast was shared on Facebook and received 1.2 million views and thousands of comments from users amazed and inspired by the move.
Some even applauded her workplace for being so supportive. But others were not impressed and called the move ‘inappropriate’ and ‘not professional’.
‘If I could inspire at least one parent to try babywearing and if it helped them even a fraction as much as it has helped me and my family, it would be well worth it,’ Martin wrote.
Despite these mixed reactions, the majority supported Martin’s decision and some went even further by posting a how-to video showing how to properly and safely wrap a baby.
